Project Goals and Requirements
HarborCOV’s website needed to serve people seeking urgent help as well as donors, volunteers, job applicants, event attendees, and community partners.
Key priorities included:
- Making support services and hotline information easy to find
- Helping visitors leave the site quickly when privacy is at risk
- Supporting keyboard and assistive-technology navigation
- Presenting sensitive information clearly and calmly
- Providing access to English- and Spanish-language resources
- Promoting fundraising, events, news, and employment opportunities
My Approach
I built the website around safety, accessibility, and direct paths to important information.
A custom safety overlay explains how to exit the website quickly and reminds visitors to consider their browsing history. A persistent quick-exit control is available throughout the site and can also be activated by pressing the Escape key twice. The exit replaces the current page in browser history, reducing the chance that using the Back button immediately returns someone to HarborCOV.
The site’s navigation, forms, overlays, menus, and interactive controls can be used without a mouse. Clear focus indicators, skip links, descriptive labels, and logical page structure make the site more usable for people navigating by keyboard or assistive technology.
For HarborCOV’s annual Taste of Chelsea fundraiser, I created a dedicated event section that shifts into the event’s own branding and color palette. PayPal buttons allow visitors to purchase tickets and tables or contribute to fundraising without requiring HarborCOV to maintain a full e-commerce system.
The content-management system also includes structured areas for news, blog content, and employment opportunities. Individual job listings provide useful information for applicants while creating additional search entry points for the organization.
What I Custom Built
HarborCOV now has a flexible website that supports both immediate safety needs and long-term community engagement.
Visitors can quickly find help, leave the site discreetly, navigate without a mouse, explore resources, view job openings, follow organizational news, support fundraising, and participate in Taste of Chelsea.
HarborCOV staff can manage services, news, jobs, events, and fundraising content through a consistent and accessible publishing system.
