Project Goals and Requirements
Clean Production Action first came to me in 2012 after an agency-built website left its staff with limited flexibility and control over its content. The organization also needed to manage three related websites with overlapping resources, events, news, and educational materials without maintaining three completely separate systems.
As the sites grew, sharing the same content across multiple domains created a new challenge. Repeating entire articles and resources made it harder to establish which site should be treated as the primary authority for each subject. The organization needed a clearer content strategy that would give each website a distinct purpose while still connecting related programs and resources.
My Approach
I reconfigured the ExpressionEngine backend around the organization’s actual publishing needs, creating a flexible multisite system that supports three independently branded websites from one installation.
CleanProduction.org serves as the primary organizational and program hub. BizNGO.org supports its working groups, annual meeting, and collaborative business community. GreenScreenChemicals.org presents the organization’s chemical assessment method, certification standards, certified products, professional resources, webinars, and training.
The platform allows content to be centrally managed and selectively displayed across the network. More recently, I have been helping the organization move away from publishing duplicate content on multiple domains. Instead, each resource is assigned a primary home, while the other websites use featured summaries and contextual links to guide visitors to the authoritative version.
This approach gives each site a clearer identity, strengthens the relationships between the three brands, and makes the content easier for visitors, search engines, and AI-powered tools to understand.
What I Custom Built
My work has included three generations of design and development for Clean Production Action since 2012, along with the ongoing evolution of its multisite publishing strategy.
I created the customized ExpressionEngine architecture, content relationships, reusable templates, and administrative workflows that allow staff to manage all three websites through one backend. I also designed and developed the responsive front ends, distinct homepage experiences, navigation systems, resource sections, event and training content, and specialized GreenScreen program information.
My ongoing work includes accessibility and keyboard usability, performance optimization, responsive front-end development, metadata and structured content improvements, search and AI readiness, content-authority planning, cross-site linking, CMS support, and continued design and feature development.
